Venturing in a new direction is a scary thing. Where does one get the courage to rise up to the challenge and go after it? Imagine your hero/idol/career role modle. Where did they get the courage? We search for this answer in today’s {morning coffee} with Digg’s Founder, Kevin Rose.

1. All the big shots today are just real people going after their dreams –
Before starting Digg, Kevin Rose was hosting a cable TV show. On the show, they interviewed famous people such as Steve Wozniak. Being in the tech space, Rose would be so nervous whenever he met these big shots. But as he says, the turning point was when he realized “these guys were just real people who decided to pursue their passions. Something flipped in their brains, and they said, “You know what? I don’t have to work for someone else. I can go do this myself.”" And you are right. Your career role models are just real people who decided to go after their dreams.
2. Trust yourself –
The mistake Rose made when he first started Digg was not trusting himself. This resulted in him bringing outsiders to take over parts of business that he was unfamiliar with. His tip? “If you don’t understand something, you don’t hand it off. You surround yourself with people who can bring you up to speed.”
3. Believe in yourself and do it -
“If you have an itch you need to scratch, something you feel needs fixing, no one else is going to build it for you… You have to really believe in yourself and know that, worst-case scenario, if it doesn’t work out, you still built something really cool.”
Even if you are not yet ready to scratch the “itch you need to scratch” or fix “something you feel needs fixing,” at least start off knowing that the big shots today were once in your shoes. Don’t feel inadequate. Trust yourself, believe in yourself and just scratch that itch!
